welp...

this was supposed to be yesterday's post, but the internet wasn't working all day, so just pretend like it's yesterday :)

first off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN! :)
we started off the morning with a delicious breakfast and birthday hats. definitely the start to a good day. haha

then we went on our first home visit, which was awesome! we went to ms. allie and ms. maria’s home, where they were hit really bad from hurricane katrina. they have been trying to get someone to come and help fix up their home for years, and have tried over six different agencies, and ARM was the first one who finally came to help them. we got to the house and began looking at all the repairs that needed to be done. their house will have to be re-roofed, the front and back porches will have to be completely taken up and replaced, on of their bathroom floors needs to be torn up and fully replaced, two windows need to be replaced, and the bedroom ceiling needs to be replaced as well as the floor. this project will definitely be a full summer one, but i am so excited to get started on it. when we were done surveying the house, we told ms. allie that we would be able to work on it this summer, and she just began to cry. she look at us, put her hands over her face, and just bent over and cried. she told us how thankful she was and how she has been waiting and praying so much for someone to come and help out her and her family, which consists of her daughter, and her daughter’s three children.
after we told her, we gathered with the family and prayed together. and then we went to our car, and i turned around and the family was all on the porch, with ms. allie in the middle, and all just hugging each other and loving on each other, and ms. allie was still crying.
i don’t know if there’s any way i can sum up this moment in just these words, but i am so so happy to be working on her house this summer. it’s so sad to me how their family has been ignored for so long with so much damage, and treated with such ignorance from from so many different agencies. but, nonetheless, this project is going to be awesome and i can already tell this family has so much love, and they deserve this.

we tried to go on a few other home visits, but some of the families weren’t home, so we came back to the lodge and did a few things here and there.

but, the best part of my day was definitely this first home visit, and i think it’s clearly started off the summer in the right path.

hospitals, trucks, and lifeboats.

so, today was an extremely eventful thursday, to say the least. haha
we were busy doing inventory on all of the construction supplies, when one of the staff members jessica got stung by a wasp. unbeknown to us, she is deathly allergic to anything that stings. like, for real deathly. and, she didn't have an epipen, which also was not good. but, if you knew jessica, she was trying to tell us she was perfectly fine, even though the last time she got stung she completely swelled up in about 20 minutes. so, we all went into crisis mode, a very controlled one, and all caravaned to the hospital, which was of course about 25 minutes away. but, we got there in time and she got treated!
it was a little bit crazy there for a second, i have to say. thinking about it, which is kind of scary, if we hadn't gone to the hospital and tried to treat it ourselves, she literally could have died. it's so crazy to think something so small could affect your life! but, off of a very sad note!
after that, we all finally got back and tried to continue with our inventory, and decided to have a little driving lesson with one of the old trucks. everything was good, until we broke down right as we got to the main road, of course. so, we were a little stuck for a while because none of us had phones or anything, of course. but, some very nice people pulled over and helped us, and went to their house to go get their truck, came back, and towed us all the way back to the lodge. and, they were about to leave for a family reunion, so it was even more nice of them to do that for us! it did get me thinking about how i don't think anyone in orlando would do that. it's sad to say that, but our lives are so caught up in the important things we have to do, like get to a family reunion for instance, that we forget the importance of everyone else.
which brings me to a final thing i wanted to share.
i've been reading the book searching for god knows what by donald miller, and the chapter i read yesterday really stood out to me. hopefully i will explain the premise right, but it's basically about the concept of a lifeboat. think of a scenario in which you are stuck on a lifeboat, and you have to choose one person to take off the lifeboat in order to survive. your mindset would automatically turn into how you can make yourself the best person in comparison to everyone else. and basically, that mindset is how a majority of our lives, whether we realize it or not; we live by comparison. we try to be the best as society would define the best, we try to be the most beautiful as society defines beauty, or success, or anything. we live by comparison instead of embracing the beautiful and amazing people God created us to be.
there was a particular passage i liked from this chapter, and i felt the words themselves would get the point across much better than i could:

"But what we really need is God. What we really need is somebody who loves us so much we don't worry about death, about our hair thinning, about other drivers pulling in front of us on the road, about whether people are poor or rich, good-looking or ugly, about whether we feel lonely, or about whether or not we are wearing clothes. We need this; we need this so we can love other people purely and not for selfish gain, we need this so we can see everybody as equals, we need this so our relationships can be sincere, we need this so we can stop kicking ourselves around, we need this so we can lose all self-awareness and find ourselves for the first time, not by realizing some dream, but by being told who we are by the only Being who has the authority to know, and by that I mean the Creator."

just thought it was a little something we could all ponder on for a second.

& whether it was a trip to the hospital, being towed by complete strangers, or reading about the concept of a lifeboat, today definitely had it's ups and downs.

faith, family, friends.

the past couple of days we've just been wrapping up all of our programming things, which finally seems to be coming together- for real this time! haha
we're starting practices, run throughs, whatever you call it- we've done it!

but mostly we've been trying to spend as much time as possible together before our teams have to split up!

sunday we went to church, and participated in this really cool thing, a commissioning prayer i think? anyways, the church prayed over us and basically "blessed" our service for the summer. kind of like the church was sending us off to go serve. it was a lot cooler than i just described. haha
then we had a little bit of a shorter sabbath time, but beth ann, john and i went into auburn, grabbed some lunch, went on a walmart run to get supplies to make our awesome name shirts (which i'll have to post a picture of later), and then to this infamous auburn store, kinnucans, where i got $30 toms. yes, $30!! i could not pass up that opportunity. haha
then we just basically spent the rest of the day planning, planning, planning!

monday we again did all of our planning things, but then had a free night! which turned out to be super fun! we bought food and had a cookout and played beach volleyball in this little park. it was a lot of fun! and then afterward we made some awesome tie dye pillowcases, which i will also have to post a picture of, and just sat up and talked!

finally, today we did some major cleaning of the house and packed up to leave for livingston! so now i am officially at the southern sportsman lodge for the rest of the summer! but i already miss the other half of our staff dearly :(

but, i am excited to finally be here and get rolling for the teams coming soon!

on another note, although i am far from home, i feel like this staff is definitely becoming my family for the summer, but also that my family is right here with me.
my co-construction coordinator, christina, reminds me so much of jenn. they look nothing alike, but they have the same mannerisms, listen to the same music, have the same humor, everything. and it's awesome because i feel like i have another older sister here with me to take her place while we're apart this summer.

also, on monday during our fun night, we were playing volleyball and it was getting a little dark, and fireflies started coming out. this is a big deal for a florida girl like me. haha. anyways, of course i went to go try and catch one, and i couldn't help but think back to catching fireflies at my pop pop and geemas (my grandpa and grandmas) farm in georgia when i was little. and it just got me thinking about my pop pop and how much i miss him. and a little part in me just thought of him looking down on me here in alabama and working for ARM, and knowing that he would be proud of what i was doing. and making my pop pop proud is exactly what i want to do in life. now, every time i see a firefly, i know my pop pop is looking down on me from heaven :)

this summer is all about my faith, family, and friends in so many different ways.

knock and the door shall be opened unto you.

today we started off with roofing school! which was a bit difficult, i have to say... but, we went to mrs. evelyn's house, who i got to speak to a few nights ago. we went over what materials we have to buy, how to install the drip edge, felt, and shingles, which sounds a lot easier than it really is. haha. but, i think i'm about 70-80% there, which i think is pretty good for not knowing anything about roofing. then we learned about tin roofing, and all the procedures to go about that.
after that, we had a little but of a break, and then lunch.

then it was time for us to film our safety video! our main "theme" so to speak was off of the mayhem commercials from allstate, incorporated into all of the arm rules. and we also printed out pictures of jessica and john who are away for the weekend and planted them in the background of each scene. it's really funny to our staff, but who knows how funny it will be to the youth... haha

anyways, after that we broke up into groups to work on various things we still need to flesh out for our evening programming. one of them being the communion drama, the group i was in.
arm has a tradition of a drama they do for communion, and it's kind of an interpretive thing with the bread and juice. the bread is symbolic of jesus, of course. but it starts out with him as a baby, to symbolize his birth. then he is baptized by sprinkling water on him. while this is happening, signs are being held up reading how jesus died for us and all the things he did in his life (for lack of a better explanation). then, water is poured into a cup which turns red, to symbolize his blood. finally, the bread is nailed to the cross, symbolizing the crucifixion.

our group was supposed to be practicing and learning the skit, but we came into an interesting and challenging discussion. one of the staff members expressed how he was uncomfortable doing the skit because baptism being symbolizes through the sprinkling of water versus immersion, as well as the idea of communion by intinction, or dipping the bread into the cup versus passing the cup around to drink. in his faith, he believed baptism was only "real" so to speak if you are submerged in water, as it is shown in many scripture passages. coming from a faith where i was baptized by my methodist grandpa by being sprinkled with water, i did become a little upset. i hate to "criticize" someone for their beliefs, because we are all raised in so many different ways, but i couldn't help but defend myself in saying i felt my baptism was very real and meant the same thing as any other baptism. then another argument came up that how could it be a baptism if i'm not confessing my own life to christ because i am too young to know better, being an infant. but, i went through confirmation and was able to affirm my faith and my beliefs in my own way.

in some ways, i do believe maybe i should have matured a little more before that, as i've been through plenty of ups and downs in my faith since then. but, haven't we all? isn't that was a relationship about god is all about? a relationship is full of fights, struggles, good times, bad times, confusion, trust, doubt, everything. and if that is what i believe a relationship with god is, then i have without a doubt had one with him, whether it's been in time with my baptism and confirmation or not.
this also led to whether or not intinction was a proper form of communion, because it again technically is not exactly how it is done in the scripture.

(side note: i am not saying any one way is right at all, i believe everyone is free to believe whatever their faith pulls them to and it's right for them. this is just how i personally feel)

in the book searching for god knows what, there's this whole section about how we're wrapped up in the "logistical" and "rule" part of the bible. we all have this set list of things we must abide by, and if we don't, then we aren't true followers of christ.
this conversation reminded me of just that.
why are we all so wrapped up in how we do things, and whether or not it is exactly set out like it was "supposed" to be implemented?
if our hearts and minds are in the right place, and we are doing this in remembrance of god, to commit to god, for god and to live for god, isn't that all that matters?
if the god wanted us to do things based on formulas, then the bible would have written out those formulas. we wouldn't have scriptures that could be interpreted in our own ways and writings that made us think about so many different thing.
in the end, doens't god just want us to glorify him? in whatever form that may be, does that really matter?

after that discussion, we moved back into final evening preparation.
i won't go into all the little details, but our mail point is this:
based off of matthew 7, god is calling us to go to him for all of our struggles, opportunities, etc. we are meant to first ask for him to be in our lives and ask for his presence in all that we do. once we ask, and make this initial surrender, we are to seek out those opportunities he is putting in our lives to serve, to grow closer to him, anything. and finally, we are supposed to knock on those doors we are too afraid to knock on and just surrender everything to him. we can trust god because he will never deceive us or lead us down the wrong path. but he has presented us with opportunities that we must take because of this trust we can have in him

that's a little bit of a rough summary, kind of very rough, but it's made me think about any risks i've been willing to take in my life. have i ever surrendered everything i had to god and gone that extra step, knocked on that door, and led myself to a place god intended for me to give all that i had?

i am not listening to your rules.

so, the title or video has nothing to do with my days. but, it's pretty hilarious and we can't stop quoting it, so i thought i would just share. haha

the past two days we've been working on our own construction training, as well as finalizing our theme for the summer. thursday, we learned all about installing a porch, which was such an awesome lesson. we learned all of the technical side of things, and it was cool to see all of the calculations and specifications. then, we were able to go on some house visits for referrals, which was also a lot of fun. the house we went to had the cutest little boy, dj, and christina and i just became distracted and played with him the whole time. haha
then, the rest of the day, we continued on with hashing out our theme. we've been kind of going through a lot of struggles with it, going around in a lot of circles, but i think we're finally being led in the right direction.

today, we learned about plumbing and flooring. woo! but, i feel like i'll be able to do a lot of handy work from now on, which is really fun!
we also finally got to exactly what we wanted to work on for our theme, and i'm so excited for it. i've been assigned to the group setting up community night, the night where we teach the youth more about the town their working in as well as poverty across the globe, and i've been able to implement a lot of the games and activities i've participated in at peacejam, so it's cool to see how they can apply in so many different areas. we've been working on the activities for that night, and also talking about God's will for poverty and what we're supposed to do about that. i'm not going to go into it more right now, but i'm definitely going to look more into it and blog more about it later, because it's such an interesting and thought provoking topic.

i'm getting a little tired, so this might be a bit scattered. but, things are still incredible and i don't want our group to split up at all!
:)

i could blog a little.

today we started on learning more specifics about the construction part of my job! we went over all the paperwork and referral things, not as fun, but then got into all of the hands on things!
we went to ms. maggie's house and worked on drywall for her with a group from auburns orientation team. they were working on her house with arm as a way to grow closer as orientation leaders before camp war eagle (their orientation) started!
her house had gotten water damage from hurricane katrina, but signs of the damage are just starting to show. but, since it's so late past katrina, insurance won't cover any repairs. we were originally supposed to take out one side of drywall and just replace it, but underneath of it were rotted boards, which need to be replaced, and then the roof had some rotted wood as well, so we had to check to make sure the other rafters weren't rotted, ending up in a little bit of a demolition mess. but, it was necessary and it was good to find out there wasn't any other damage! unfortunately, the team had to leave around lunch time, as did we, so we weren't able to replace any drywall, just really prepare for it. but, there is going to be a team set up at the tuskegee site to make sure it gets finished as soon as possible!
but ms. maggie did invite us to eat lunch with her. she was such a sweet woman! she told us all about her life, and how she retired from working on the custodial staff at auburn for 30 years, and before that had worked at a home for elderly people with disabilities in assisting them with cleaning, grocery shopping, etc., since they weren't able to do all of those things for themselves. also, she told us about her family. her husband had passed due to cancer a while back, and just this year she lost her youngest son also due to an illness. but, she has three other daughters, one in the military, one working in a nursing home, and another still finishing up school. i could see how proud she was every time she mentioned her family, and she went and showed us pictures, and all of the works! when she was talking to us, i was thinking about what a caring woman she was. she has served people her entire life, been there for others, cared for others, everything. and it is completely past her time for someone else to care for her, and i am so glad we were able to spend time with her. and her birthday is on the 23rd, so let's not forget to celebrate! haha
after that, we went back to the parsonage and learned electric stuff! we had an electrician come by and teach us all the tricks of the trade. which is actually going to come in handy with things i thought of that need to be fixed at my house!
then, we had a little bit of a break before we were going to the auburn wesley foundation for dinner, so chrisitina took us on a tour around auburn! the campus was so beautiful, and they had so many awesome traditions she talked about! i really loved it!
then we went to the wesley foundation, had dinner, played volleyball, and hung out. it was kind of a free night for us, which was very nice to have!
tomorrow we're going to be doing more construction training, and finalizing what we want to teach the youth each which, so i will definitely update more on that once it's a little more clear!

and i will leave you with a picture of our beautiful staff :)

ask, seek, knock.

so let's see where to begin!
the past few days have been very fun of course, but also we're starting to get more into the planning stages of the summer which is really exciting.

anyways!
yesterday was our sabbath, so we went to church in the morning and then came back and hang out for a while. then we had a spontaneous walmart trip, which are always fun! we're going to make tie-dye pillow cases next sunday, yay!

then we had a candlelit dinner to our italian food while listening to music from lady and the tramp, and continued to plan how we were going to welcome in our newest staff member, "chet". i suppose i haven't really explained that, so here it goes: there's one guy who hasn't been here until today, we thought of all these crazy and funny things we could do to welcome him in. first off, his name is really chris, but we thought we would just keep calling other names that start with the letter c. and somehow, chet just stuck. so we constantly referred to him as chet before he got here. then we thought we would put all the food at his end of the table for the first meal we had together, and keep asking chet to pass everything to us. and we made a sign that said welcome, chet! which we definitely put up on the wall by the front door. and there are plenty more things i'm not thinking of, but it's probably a lot funnier to us than everyone else, but that's okay. it has seriously provided for much of our laughter. haha
moving on! after dinner, we did the myers briggs personality inventory, which was pretty accurate. i scored as an ESFJ, or the guardian provider. here's the description:

it was pretty cool to analyze everyone's personality and see how accurate it was to the dynamics of our group and how we are going to use this knowledge for the rest of the summer. the livingston sight has a good amount of introverts, and a pretty good amount of extroverts, so i'm excited to see how that plays out in our interaction with the youth.
the rest of the night, we started to dissect through bible verses we had been looking up about prayer and questions such as why we pray, how do we pray, and what do we pray for. words such as righteousness, humility, being, emotion, and reverence were all mentioned, and i think they just make you analyze their true meaning and what emotions, if they are these, should we feel while we're praying.

and now today, monday!
chet came this morning, and we didn't do any of the things we told ourselves we would, of course. but we did keep his sign up, and explain all the plans we did have. and we still all him chet. haha
then we really focused today on core planning things and trying to figure out our theme. after a ton of discussion, like a tonnn, we decided on using matthew 7:7-8 to be our theme verse.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."

it was cool to think of what this verse really means and the context that it relates to. context wise, the rest of the verse talks about how god isn't going to forsake us or deceit us, and when he wants to go somewhere, or if we are asking him for something, he's not going to give us false promising or things opposite of what we are seeking. also, to me, knocking meant stepping towards what god is calling us to even when we don't what's behind the door. our knocking is committing to that call, and knowing that we can trust god is what will get us through it.
lisa also shared with us a very good mother teresa quote:

"we find Jesus in the face of the poor"

i'm excited to go into more detail with all of our plans, and am so so excited to work with the youth groups and teach them all we've been learning. also, we start to do the construction things in a few days, which i'm also excited for. still a little nervous, but i love our team and know we can do anything we put our hearts to!

also, follow john's blog on his arm journey! :)

welcome, chet!

just some fun things for today, i'll get to the updates a little later!

and

apparently chocos are the thing around here. i feel like i need some to fit in, or just be able to do anything... haha

the end for now.

the power of laughter.

today was completely filled with laughter, and i wouldn't have had it any other way.
i find that laughter is the greatest way to get to know a group of people and to become close with them, and today was just that!
before the laughter began, although it definitely occurred in the morning, we had our cpr and first aid training. now i'm certified for two years! woo!
then, we ended up having a lot of free time, where many of us took advantage of with a nap!
after that, we all spent time looking for a verse that we could use for our summer theme. my favorite one i found was mark 11:24. i say you look it up :)
finally, the laughter began. we seriously spent the rest of the day playing and learning games.
who knew that my random plethora of game knowledge would really come in handy one day! we played things like the animal game, human knot, ninja, signs (which seemed to develop the most amount of laughter), and more. it was just awesome being about to be so goofy with each other and have the most fun we could!

today was a pretty easy day, but an awesome one to say the least.

being able to laugh can do so much to a group, and i'm glad i've definitely surpassed my laughing quota with this one!

so, here it goes!

i decided that i would create a blog to document my summer- so those at home don't feel too much out of the loop! who knows if anyone will read it, but that's okay!

this summer i am going to be the construction coordinator for alabama rural ministry in livingston, alabama! i am so excited for what's to come, and i know there are going to be lots of things in store!

i have already learned so much in our mere two days of training, but i'm having a great time already. all of the other staffers are so fun to work with, and we're starting to really start the summer off right.

i'm in a bit of a daze right now, not quite sure where to begin, so i think i'll save some of my posting for later :)
